Do I need to stop antihistamine use
before my hair transplant surgery?

Q: I am taking benadryl on a regular basis for my allergies. Do I need to stop them before the procedure?

A: Many antihistamines cause vasoconstrictions of the blood vessels. This is what prevents the release of histamines during an allergic reaction. However the side effects of this vasoconstriction is an increase in blood pressure.

This increase in blood pressure does cause more bleeding during the procedure and therefore more anesthesia and swelling will occur. So if possible we want you to stop usage of the antihistamines so your procedure will be expedited.

Please call our office for your free consultation and Dr. Shapiro will personally review your medical history so that we can discuss your use of antihistamines before you come for hair surgery.
